[He eyes up the glass, then his coffee, then shrugs and tips some of it in. It doesn't really go with coffee the way whiskey does, but it doesn't exactly make it much worse either. He takes a sip and pulls a face, but then he takes another.
The magazine comment earns a raised eyebrow]
Now what's an upstanding young lady like you doing reading magazines like that?
[He's not serious, though he is a little surprised - and intrigued]
[He swirls the cup around like a fine wine and takes another sip - a sip he nearly chokes on at her reply. Once his spluttering is under control he blinks at her]
Well I don't imagine it's quite the same reason...
[Skye frowns when he reminds her just how young a lot of these soldiers are. She blurts out the first thing that comes to mind before she can stop her.]
One day this will stop.
[She immediately regrets it and quickly tries to cover up her mistake.]
[There's something so certain about her words that gives him pause - it's inevitable, he supposes, all wars must end sometime, but that's not quite the tone in her voice. He brushes it off, for now, but it's just another little oddity about her filed away for later]
I suppose it will. I'd just rather it stopped soon. Or had never even started.
Don't worry about it! <3 I hope you're doing well.
Well, mostly the same thing, just slower and slightly less... soul destroyingly.
[His tone is flippant, but his words are genuine. He'd rather be treating appendicitis or other routine surgeries than pulling shrapnel out of kids' chests]
Well the death is kind of what we're hoping to avoid.
[He's being glib, but he understands, and it's not like he hasn't had to deal with his share of death - it doesn't get any easier to handle it. He takes a sip of his drink and goes quiet for a moment before shrugging]
You deal with it because you have to. Because who else is going to? Here we're not given a choice, but no matter how much you hate it, there's kids whose lives depend on you, so you've got to get on with it.
[A sad smile tugs at her lips, because, he has a point. He's responsible for so much, literally, having others lives in his hands. From what she's over heard others say, he's pretty amazing at what he does.
Reaching out, Skye puts her hand on top of his and squeezes it gently.]
We need more people like you in this world.
[Maybe he didn't need to hear it, but, the more time Skye has spent here, the more she realizes just how many good people exist out there. Especially in terrible times like this.]
[For a moment, there's genuine gratitude in his face, and he gives her a look to let her know how much her words, her encouragement, actually means to him.
But then it's gone, and he flashes a wide grin]
There are no more people like me, I'm one of a kind.
Why not? We've got nothing better to do. Who's playing?
[He's sure he can get somebody to tell him where the game is - he's pretty confident he hasn't actually been excluded intentionally, because nobody's ever given him a reason to think his presence - or his money - isn't welcome at a card table]
I'll spot you some cash.
[He knows he probably can't quite afford it, unless he wins, but he also knows she doesn't seem to have a whole lot of anything, cash included, and he doesn't want her to miss out on the fun]

[Skye asks, clearly being sarcastic. The gin is awful, but it's strong.
She goes to take another sip and smiles against the rim of the glass when he calls her 'upstanding'.]
For the same reason an upstanding young man such as yourself reads them?
no subject
One of our finer vintages, absolutely.
[He swirls the cup around like a fine wine and takes another sip - a sip he nearly chokes on at her reply. Once his spluttering is under control he blinks at her]

So you don’t look at them for the naked ladies?
[Cause that’s her reason for looking at them.]
Plus, the articles are interesting.

[Hawkeye stares at her for a long moment before finally speaking]
...huh.
You know not a lot of women like you would admit to that.
no subject
Women like me?
no subject
You know...
[He waves a hand vaguely to indicate the words he isn't saying]
Women who.. enjoy.. looking at other women.

[There, she says it for him.]
I’m not—-
I mean, I guess, kind of.
[She wasn’t a fan of labels.
Anyway]
How’d the surgery go?

[That earns a bemused expression and he's definitely going to ask about that kind of later, but he'll allow the subject change for now]
Well as it ever does. Another pound of shrapnel out of another group of kids.

One day this will stop.
[She immediately regrets it and quickly tries to cover up her mistake.]
It has to.
I'm so sorry this took forever!
[There's something so certain about her words that gives him pause - it's inevitable, he supposes, all wars must end sometime, but that's not quite the tone in her voice. He brushes it off, for now, but it's just another little oddity about her filed away for later]

What would you be doing? If you weren't--?
[In the middle of a war, trying to save soldiers lives.]
yea ty, and you too!
Well, mostly the same thing, just slower and slightly less... soul destroyingly.
[His tone is flippant, but his words are genuine. He'd rather be treating appendicitis or other routine surgeries than pulling shrapnel out of kids' chests]
I was a doctor before I was drafted, see.
<3
Wow.
[She reaches for her drink to take a small sip.]
I don't know how you do it, even before being drafted. All the--
[Skye gestures with her hand.]
Blood and stuff. Not to mention all of the death--

Thank God. One of you is enough.
[Quiet for a minute as she takes another sip of her drink, Skye leans against the bartop.]
You done for the night?
oh look it's me again ><
That's true, you wouldn't be able to hand more than one.
[He winks, taking another swig of his drink]
With any luck, should be.
Haha! <3 It's all good
Got any plans for the rest of the evening?
[Because she doesn't. Well, other than running over the scenario of how she got here again in her mind for the billionth time.]
Re: Haha! <3 It's all good
Nothing I can't cancel.
[Which is to say nothing at all other than sitting around drinking]
Why, want to make me a better offer?
[He waggles his eyebrows playfully]
no subject
[That's equally playful as it is sarcastic. She was practically climbing the walls here with boredom.]
Heard some of the guys were playing poker.
and once again I take forever
And they didn't invite me?
[Hawkeye puts on an exaggerated expression of shock]
Where is this game supposed to be taking place, did you hear?
All good! It's always a pleasure to get a reply from you no matter how long it takes <3
[Skye takes another sip of her drink, nose wrinkling in disgust.]
No. Why? You wanna go crash the game?
[Because she's totally up for that.]
<3
Why not? We've got nothing better to do. Who's playing?
